Amanda Orick climbed through the portrait hole and into her knew common room. Wow, she thought. The room was lavishly adorned in the house colours and had lots of squidgy armchairs in front of a blazing hot fire.
She peered around the room and said, "Hello? Is there anybody here or am I the only one?" When she got no answer she lowered her heavy trunk onto the floor. She ran over to the staircase marked 'Girs Dormitory' and walked up the first few steps. She then hauled her suitcase up to the top, stored it under one of the four poster beds, and decided that she would unpack later.
Amanda came downstairs again and sat in front of the fire. She slipped off her black plimsolls and toasted her feet. She leant back in her seat and sighed. I wonder when the others will arrive, she said to herself.

So far the day had been very boring. Ever since the incident at the lake he was very lonely. Siva wasn't talking to him in fact he was sure that she was avoiding him. So, that just left him alone most of the time. He didn't have any best friends besides her so he was feeling very bummed at the moment.
Walking into the common room at first look he thought it was empty. He sighed and through his bag down on one of the couches. Then he jumped a little has he noticed that there as another in the room. "Hey." he spoke slightly shocked.

Amanda swivelled her head round to face the boy who had spoken. She smiled nervously at him as she could see he was obviously much older than her, perhaps 15 or 16. "Oh, please sit down. That is, if you want to. Or if you want to, erm..." She broke off in mid-sentence, not knowing what a Fifth Year male student would do in the Common Room apart from sit down.
She quickly put her shoes back on; it was only good manners. Her mother had nagged her non-stop about manners before she boarded the Hogwarts Express, and Amanda still heard her mother shouting at her as it pulled away from the station. She grinned again, but soon stopped. She didn't want to look goofy as a first impression. She tried to angle her face and changed her expression so as to look 'cool', but she figured that the boy would soon see straght past the first impression.
"So, what's your name?" she asked the boy. "I'm guessing you're in fifth or sixth year, right?"
